The reason you must do this is because the different divisions and classes will greatly determine what type of kart you will race as well as which style of race. For those of you that are unaware, allow us to explain. The division basically just dictates the type of race and track which you will take part in. This means that different divisions will utilize different styles of tracks and also vary in length. For instance, some divisions will only race on asphalt, others on dirt, and some on both. Some divisions will feature tracks that make only left turns, other will feature both right and left turns. Some divisions will have races that are 20 laps of a ¼ mile and some 1/10 of a mile. This is the reason that choosing your division is such an important part of getting into karts.
When it comes to choosing your class, it is usually best to choose which type of division you are interested in first. This is because the division that you choose will ultimately determine which classes you will be allowed to use. When we say class, we refer to the types of kart that are allowed to be raced in a particular division. For example, a particular division will only allow a certain type of engine and design of chassis.
