Looking good and feeling good all begin with eating breakfast. It sets the tone for our entire day. Healthy breakfast recipes are fairly easy to find and offer you nutritional benefits of one kind or another. Although difficult to believe, skipping breakfast does not help you lose weight, but eating breakfast does! Give your body the energy it needs to get started in the morning and have more energy, healthier skin and bones and a healthier heart to boot! Remember that by skipping breakfast, you stand more of a chance at grabbing that candy bar later in the day, which causes you to want to eat less healthy foods at dinner…it’s a vicious cycle. Skip the donuts and try one of these great breakfast ideas.
Smoothies: Start with a cup of fat-free milk. Use 2 cups sliced fresh nectarines, peaches, or apricots and put in a 6 ounce container of peach fat-free yogurt. Blend these together until smooth. Then add a cup of crushed ice a little at a time and viola! A delicious and healthy breakfast! *Note: You can use any type of fruit in a smoothie, so experiment and find some mixtures you really like!
Good Start: Take a 100% wheat tortilla and wrap up 2 ounces of lean ham or turkey bacon. Add a 6 ounce container of yogurt, some orange juice, and you are good to go!
Breakfast burrito: 1 whole wheat tortilla, ½ cup egg substitute that has been scrambled with about ½ cups vegetables (green peppers, onions, etc.) Add 1 ounce low fat cheese.
Hot comforting breakfast: Cook a package of lower sugar instant oatmeal and add ½ cup fresh fruit and a tablespoon of chopped nuts. Be sure you cook the oatmeal with either water or no fat milk.
Cereal it is! 1 cup whole grain cereal with ½ cup low-fat milk. Add ½ cup fresh strawberries or blueberries.
Quick and satisfying: Start with a high fiber granola bar and then pour yourself a glass of skim milk. Have a banana for your breakfast desert and out the door you go!
Fresh and delicious: Have some grapefruit (you can even sprinkle just a tad of sugar on it.) Make yourself some whole wheat toast with peanut butter on it and enjoy!
Light yet filling! Get low-fat cottage cheese and top with fresh fruit of your choice. Yum!
Yummy Parfaits: Layer yogurt, kiwi (or other fruit) and granola and enjoy a satisfying parfait for breakfast.
There are many combinations which can be put together for healthy breakfast recipes. Remember you can also buy flaxseed and bran powder and sprinkle those on any of your breakfast foods for added nutrition. Waffles and pancakes are not out of the question if you use whole wheat and only make them occasionally. Occasionally, eggs are okay too, but it is better to use egg substitute or egg whites only. People often feel hungry during the day but many times they are just getting dehydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of water or juice at breakfast.
