Automotive GPS

Because Automotive GPS are used by so many people, there are understandably many features that can come on a unit. Different people have different needs in a GPS. Whether you spend very little time in your car, or you practically live in it, there is an Automotive GPS for you.

Basic: These are “no-frill” units that have mapping for the lower 48 states. Some models require scrolling to find the information you need while others do not. The basic units generally have less points of interests (POI) mapped onto them but some have an exceptional amount of locations. Not all, but most of the basic Automotive GPS give you options for choosing the shortest distance or the quickest time as far as routes.

Intermediate: These have additional features besides those of the basic models of automotive GPS. There are generally more POIs and most have text-to-speech routing. This means that the GPS unit will tell you which street you are turning onto. Other features in this bracket are MP2 players, real time traffic capability and Bluetooth technology. While you have to check the specifics on each unit, there are some at this level that have turn by turn directions and indicate where there are traffic congestions or stopped interstate traffic. Travel kits and FM transmitters can be found on some models in the intermediate level. Motorcyclists can also find GPS units in this price and capability range.

Advanced: These automotive GPS units are fully loaded. They can receive premium services in addition to the basics. These units require services that have monthly billed subscriptions. The advanced units have the capabilities to hold all of the bells and whistles that you may want to add to your GPS. You can get real time gas prices, real time weather and more. MPEG and JPEG capabilities are another of the high-tech goodies available. With these systems you can usually obtain detour routes and voice services that will work with your cell phone. If you want more features, you can attach a button on your steering wheel which activates speaking menu on which you can do things like tell the unit to “find address.” RVers and truckers have units for them too with extra large screens and preloaded maps. There are a lot of entertainment features on those as well. Remember that many of these extra services require an extra monthly subscription.

All-purpose: This set of units can be used in different applications, and have things like marine functions or units that can be used for hiking or other outdoor activities. If you need it all, there are multi-purpose units that offer you Auto, Marine and hiking services such as topographic maps.

Finding the Automotive GPS for you may take a little investigation. You should first figure out just what you need it for and then go look at the options. It’s easy to get caught up with all of the extras, which is fine if you really want or need them, but they are just extras for most people.
