Everyone wants to get fit, or if they are already fit, they want to stay fit. If you don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars per year for a health club membership, or just don’t like commuting to exercise, and your budget cannot handle the expense of one of those fitness club grade treadmills, you might consider aerobics videos. For far less than the cost of a year of step classes, you can get a high quality step bench, several sets of dumbbells, aerobics sneakers, and a solid collection of exercise videos.
Unlike a health club membership, once your aerobics videos are paid for, you still have them a year later.
There are many advantages to aerobics videos besides cost. For one thing the variety of aerobics videos available is tremendous. There is bound to be something that suits you and your current level of fitness. You will also find a video for a fitness routine that interests you. There are videos with power step workouts, funky floor routines, heavy duty iron pumping, tai chi, yoga, kickboxing and other martial arts, and more.
The quality of instruction varies, but some videos have terrific teachers with years of experience. Advanced exercisers might even find more challenging and suitable routines than they find at their own local health club.
Another advantage of aerobics videos is that weather doesn’t affect your workout (unless, of course, the power goes out). If you are a runner, walker, inline skater or cyclist, aerobics done with a video can be a great cross training activity, especially when the weather is so lousy you don’t want to go outside and do your thing.
If you are overweight, out of shape, or in any other way suffer from not quite having the body image you want, you may feel too self-conscious to go to a gym regularly. With aerobics videos, you can put on a raggedy old T-shirt and stuff a video in the DVD player or VCR, and work yourself ragged without having to worry about anyone smirking at the spectacle of you in spandex.
It doesn’t get more convenient than popping a DVD or tape in. Getting into a car and fighting traffic may discourage you from going to the gym. However, most people can make the journey to the room where the TV is. And if you screw up your routine or are interrupted, you can rewind and redo whatever part of your workout you want to. Just remember to keep moving while you rewind so that you keep your heart rate up.
There are downsides, however. Mainly, you have to make sure you get a good video. There are some absolutely dire videos available. Every celebrity seems compelled to release an exercise tape. This may shock you but celebrities didn’t get famous because of their knowledge of exercise physiology. The best way to avoid getting a really lousy video is to read reviews of videos and buy aerobics videos that get good reviews.
