The fourth Thursday of November is Thanksgiving Day – and its today. Turducken time, yummy!! Only this time you may wish to give the traditional chicken in duck in turkey combo a miss and try a bigger and more exotic roast.
Multi-bird roasts have been around since the time of the Russian czars and French kings; however even chefs gracing royal kitchens did not come up with a roast so supersized that it can feed 125 people, i.e. after it has been cooked for a small matter of eight hours.
Apart from the cooking time the birds have to be de-boned which takes four hours and preparing the stuffing takes a couple of days. This roast comes from Devon in England and contains 48 birds representing 12 species. The number 12 signifies each of the 12 days of Christmas, how thoughtful! but don’t ask the birds. Swans and bustards can heave a sigh of relief, they are protected species now.
Turkey, goose, chicken, pheasant, partridge, pigeon squab, Aylesbury duck, Barbary duck, poussin, guinea fowl, mallard-and quail with herb and fruit stuffing go into the making of this 50,000 calorie feast. This humongous roast will cost you £665 or a little more than $1000.
Those who have tasted it commend the roast for its taste as well as the impression it creates. The game birds impart rich flavors to the dish; however the flavors tend to mix and you may not really be able to tell if the morsel in your mouth is goose and chicken or mallard and turkey.
