There are lots of things that you will need to think about when you are shopping for a home audio system. One of the things that you need to think about is what type of system you need and how many speakers it will take to complete that system. What will determine this? It will depend mostly upon what type of audio you are trying to play and what number of channels you will be looking to produce. You might want a simple two-channel system or maybe you will opt for a Dolby Digital system which has 6 speakers. Whatever the case, you will need to know where to put all of these things. You can’t figure out positioning until you know how many speakers you have to position, though.
The majority of people who go out and buy speakers are doing so with their home theater in mind. They are trying to create a nice place for their family to watch movies and experience real television, so they pack out a room with nice speakers. Some people buy speakers in order to play music, but these folks usually settle for a simple system that only has a couple of speakers. It is really easy to work with only two speakers, since you can put them pretty much anywhere in your house. Plus, you only have to worry about having a speaker on each side of the listening area, so setting things up is relatively easy.
If you are trying to have a home theater, then you are probably going to have to go with a Dolby Digital sound system that will require you to position 6 different speakers. Things can obviously get a little bit complicated when you start adding speakers to your configuration. What will your six speakers include? Typically, you will have 5 speakers with the ability to play a full range of sounds and one subwoofer to provide the bump to your sound. This is for the new equipment, of course, as older equipment won’t feature this type of technology.
With your six speakers, you will need to have three full range speakers in the front, with one being on the right, one in the center, and one on the left. This will give you great sound projecting out to your audience. In addition, you will want to place a couple of larger, full range speakers in the back of the room. These will be on either side of the listening area. You will want to make sure that these are bookshelf speakers or something equivalent. Finally, you will have a subwoofer that should located somewhere in the back of the room. This is the important thing that will give your system to kick that it needs.
