Bookshelf Speakers

Many people that don’t have a lot of room to work with tend to opt for bookshelf speakers. If you lack the room to accommodate large speakers you can still have a wonderful music experience by using the bookshelf style speakers provided you take just a few things into consideration before buying. The first thing to not is that while these are called “bookshelf” speakers that does not necessarily mean that they are going to fit your bookshelves and while they are compact in comparison to standard speakers that certainly does not mean that they compromise the sound value at all.

Taking precise measurements before buying is a step in the right direction as far as fitting is concerned but what about if you just sit them on your bookshelves and start to enjoy a favored CD, only soon to discover that your speakers are on the ground because the vibration caused them to slide off of the bookshelves? There are two ways of dealing with this situation. You could either mount the speakers on walls, or on stands, designed for the purpose.

Properly placing your speakers is crucial to your listening enjoyment. This depends on the size of the speakers and some bookshelf speakers are too big to fit in bookshelves. You can get the best sound from them if you mount them on a stand, and keep them about a foot away from the walls, rather than mount them on the walls of your room. Also keep them away from furniture, corners, and other sound equipment. This will allow the music to bounce, and give you a better surround sound experience.

You would also need amplifiers delivering power ranging from 10 to 150 watts per channel, to augment the sound from bookshelf speakers. You can optimize your listening enjoyment provided you get the appropriate amount of power from the amplifier system. You should also invest in a woofer and a pair of tweeters. To enhance your listening enjoyment even more so, insure that the speakers are placed at ear level.

If you don’t have the space, the budgets, or the inclination for big floorstanding speakers, go with something a little smaller. The most popular speakers for home theater use are bookshelf speakers, named this because they’re small enough to fit on a bookshelf or a stand. These speakers are great space savers and blend nicely into just about any room. Because you can’t fit really big speakers into a small box, bookshelf systems are limited in terms of the number and size of speaker drivers.

Most bookshelf speakers are two-way systems, containing a tweeter (for highs) and a midrange driver or midsize woofer, typically 8 inches or less. But the right bookshelf speaker design can deliver surprisingly good sound, with more than acceptable bass response. You can and probably should supplement a bookshelf system with a separate subwoofer, especially for home theater use. As with floor standing speakers, the more money you spend, the better the sound you’ll receive. The best bookshelf systems deliver sound practically indistinguishable from what you’ll get from a similar floor standing system.
