The cost of having a printer either at home or in a personal office used to be high and considered a luxury. Now printers have become much less expensive, with simple printers being sold as package deals with computers and generally found individually for well under $100. These low cost printers are great for printing standard documents but there are also higher end printers for specific needs.
Typically low cost printers also have added features such as scanners and fax machines built right into the printer. They can copy both color and black and white. Different brands will be able to make copies at different speeds with the copies per minute labeled somewhere on the package. These multi-purpose printers can be found in two types: inkjet and laser. These types are the way that image is produced on paper.
Inkjet printers are typically slower than laser printer and use much more ink. Many inkjet printers are inexpensive and can be found in packaged deals with a variety of products such as computers and digital cameras. The higher end of these printers tends to be used by artists and photographers because of their ability to print high quality images.
Laser printers are best for text although they can print images. The quality of pictures from a laser printer is typically poor because of the low amount of ink used and the speed of the printing. Laser printers work well for printing large quantities in a short amount of time. If color needs to be printed there are color laser printers. The benefit of laser printers is the speed of the printing and the smaller amount of ink they use.
The way a printer creates images on paper isn’t the only thing a person must consider when purchasing a new printer. The type of paper a printer uses also may affect the choice. There are many different types of paper such as standard thin white paper and photo paper. Some printers can print on any type of paper while maintaining a high quality image while other printers may print on any paper but the quality decreases as the thickness of the paper increases.
Certain printers may not work with Apple computers. Most printers are PC compatible and attach with a USB plug. Many printers are Mac compatible although they may need different software than they would with a PC. There are labels on every printer stating whether they work with Macs or not.
