Shopping for a portable DVD player can be confusing with all of the brand names and features being thrown at you, with each store promoting a different type or style. Some stores will tell you that just because a product is a low cost does not mean that it’s poor quality and still has all the features of the higher end products. They generally say this about products they are trying to remove from their inventory.
Other stores might tell you that if you don’t get the most expensive portable DVD player then you are paying for poor quality products. While either store may be right, costs don’t always have to do with the quality of a product. The features that a higher end portable DVD player has may not be what you need. It’s up to you to decide what it is you’re looking for when it comes to portable entertainment.
The cheaper end of the portable DVD players is about one hundred dollars. These usually include the bare minimum as far as this type of product goes. The screens are standard with sizes ranging from 7” to 9”. Some models may have widescreen but it’s not common for this size. The screen quality for these cheaper models will look worse the closer one is to the screen. Sound quality is also minimal as speakers may be poor quality. Most of these will play just about any DVD or CD type including rewritable CDs and DVDs. They may come in different colors at this price range with colors like pink, black and silver. For people looking for a generic portable DVD player just for the kids in the car or something for the bus ride home cheap DVD players are a good price for a simple product.
Mid-level portable DVD players are between one hundred and two hundred dollars. The feature found on most of the portable DVD players in this price range is an LCD screen, which provides better quality images and video. The screens may still be as small as 7” but can be found up to 10” for less than two hundred dollars. Another feature is longer battery life, which is important for long trips without a means for charging the battery. A few brands will also feature docks for iPods, providing a better means for playing music. Speaker quality may also be an improvement over the less expensive DVD players.
High end portable DVD players can be as expensive as four hundred dollars but they have a lot of extra features and higher quality parts. The screen size still range between 7” and 10” and most screens are LCD. Some of the higher end players will also have parental locks so that children can’t watch something they shouldn’t when they think mom and dad aren’t looking. Remotes and car mounts are also some of the added features in certain brands, making them ideal for easy car travel.
