Playstation 2

There were difficulties with the initial release of the Playstation 2, due to manufacturing delays. This caused the public to seek out the much anticipated console at such places as online auction sites. There they would pay above the normal retail price just for the opportunity to be one of the first to have the game. It was not uncommon, during that time, for people to pay in the neighborhood of $1,000 for a Sony PS2.

Sony showed little interest in online gaming until the arrival of the Xbox. Sony then released several online games such as SOCOM; US Navy Seals.

A new console design was released in time for the appearance of the Grand Theft Auto San Andreas game. It was a sleeker and neater design than the original PS2. Again, manufacturing delays caused trouble for the shipment of the newly designed PS2. Right before Christmas of that year, to make matters worse, a tanker became stuck in the Suez Canal, blocking shipments of the new Sony PS2. There were shortages in 1700 North American Stores on the day before Christmas.

Some of the games from the original Playstation were incompatible with the new PS2, but it didn’t seem to cause too much of a stir. The public went wild over Sony’s new baby. There also came an rush of Online PS2 games, which became popular with the PC gamers. Apparently, there have also been some unauthorized hacks which makes the PS2 console able to serve as a functional web browser.

The bulkier Original PS2 gave way to the sleeker model. Although originally only black in color, there were silver consoles sold in Great Britian first, and eventually made their way to North America. There has also been a limited edition of a pink PS2 Console. The Sony PS2 has actually undergone quite a few subtle changes over the years to enhance its allure to the public. The changes were an effort to make it the lightest, most attractive and user friendly system to have yet been released to the gaming world.

Sony PS2 also released newer and better Bells and Whistles (Accessories) including the “Eye Toy” (a USB camera), Fishing rod and reels, a dance pad, microphones, various guitar controllers, and even a Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw controller. More add-ons, more plug ins, more fun for the public, which is just what Sony intended.

The PS2 pretty much cleared its competition with all of the new games and accessories, but Microsofts Xbox continues to keep within a close distance. It was only after all of the upgrades that Sony announced the newest member of the Playstation family; The Playstation 3.
