iPod Car Audio

It seems like not too long ago the way people would listen to music in the car had to be with tapes or CDs. If people wanted to listen to their MP3 players, headphones were the closest things to car audio a person had. Advances in iPod peripherals have increased the options for car audio making it possible to not only listen to music on headphones without noise interference but also to play music on the iPod through the speakers of a car.

Some car manufacturers or car stereo places can install iPod docks inside of the car like in the glove compartment or directly on the dashboard. They can then set up the dock to be connected to the audio of the car so that whenever an iPod is placed in the dock it can play through the car stereo. This is usually very expensive and not often done since there are simpler and less expensive iPod car audio options.

The cheapest way to play music through the car stereo from an iPod is a cassette adapter. These can be found in most electronic stores for under $20. Cassette adapters are going out of style because new car models no longer have tape decks in them. The adapters can also be unreliable since the tape can easily be damaged. The sound quality is also poor compared to other methods.

Radio transmitters are the most common way of playing the iPod through the car stereo. The transmitter is simply plugged into the iPod and then a person can select a station on the transmitter. This emits radio waves on that station so as long as that station is unused, the iPod will play its music on that station. As long as the station is clear the sound quality is as good as the car stereo allows. For long distances these can be a nuisance since radio stations change in different locations and people may find themselves constantly searching for an empty station to use. Certain models also prevent the iPod from being able to be charged while playing through the speakers.

The most important peripheral when it comes to car audio is a charger. Many car audio accessories for the iPod include a car charger as part of the package although not all do. Car charges can be purchased separately. Every car charger from any company works about the same. The cable plugs the iPod into the car cigarette lighter. Each car charger is designed for certain models of iPod and will state on the package which ones they are compatible with.

Most of these products will work the same way no matter what company makes them. Different companies may have products in different colors and styles that may be why a person chooses them. Certain companies will make different packages that will include everything needed for iPod car audio. Don’t let higher costs influence you decision, just get the car audio peripherals that work for you.
