No matter what type of media player you have, in order to listen to it you must have headphones. There are many different kinds of headphones for MP3 players and personal media players. There may be as many different kinds of headphones as there are players. So if you’re in the market for a pair of headphones, be prepared to spend a little time learning about the varieties. Otherwise, you may be best served to decide on what you want your headphones to do before you start your search and limit your search to those specifications.

Headphones that are corded require a physical connection with your player in order to function. This connection must be secure or the quality of the sound you hear will be diminished. Corded headphones can be somewhat cumbersome because there are no industry standards on the length that the cord can be. Thus some headphones have an extended length cord that can be a tripping hazard or gets tangled into other items you may be carrying while other headphones may have a short cord that keeps getting pulled out of the jack its plugged into or is uncomfortable in the connection from both ears to the single line that runs to the player.

If you are going to buy an expensive MP3 player or personal media player, chances are it will come with basic headphones or ear buds. Don’t expect the quality of these headphones or ear buds to match the quality of your player. You can be almost certain that they will not. The manufacturer of your player is not required to include a listening device, even though it is the only way you can listen to your device so whatever headphones or ear buds are included are like a courtesy.

This means you want to invest in a good set of headphones to provide you with the maximum listening quality your money can buy. Today, thanks to the continued advances in the development of headphones, many corded headphones work well not only on your personal media player but on your home system as well. The limits of headphones are now often imposed only on what user preferences are.

The modern addition to the family of headphones is the ear bud. Ear buds are preferred by many because they rest on the inside of the ear instead of sitting on the outside and create a lightweight, open, airy feel that allows the user to experienced concentrated music quality almost directly into the ear. If ear buds are your choice, you want to make sure that they are a good fit for the ear. Poorly fitting ear buds can fall out of your ear or be so snug that only a short while of using them can cause your ears to be sore.

As a rule of thumb, you should never listen to your music or media so loud that it impairs your ability to hear other sounds around you as this poses a hazard.
