Stop anyone on the street of any city across America and ask who they think was the original innovator of digital video recording technology. Hands down, the majority of people would shout out TiVo. It doesn’t matter that ReplayTV hit the market with their first DVR two years earlier in 1997. TiVo came out the door running and didn’t stop until they became a household name, and the household product that everyone wanted to own.

Despite its lesser success as compared to TiVo, ReplayTV still openly claims to provide the “best product and the best value.” Despite tough competition from TiVo they still provide a rather successful service by promoting their own brand of DVRs in the growing convenience-driven market of digital recording.

The pride of the DVR revolution which ReplayTV originally started is that it allows consumers to make the most of their free time. Most people live extremely busy lives and when they do get a chance to sit down and watch a little television they don’t want to be bombarded with advertisements or spend half the evening searching through the tiny print in a TV guide.

With ReplayTV these consumers can get comfy in their own living rooms and by a simple one touch record set up they can capture all of their favorite shows to be viewed at whatever time they choose. While watching, DVRs allow the consumer to skip all commercials and with ReplayTVs unique quick skip system they can even jump to particular sections of a recorded show as they please.

Of course there are all the perks of a DVR that ReplayTV shares with other services such as TiVo, like searching for all the airing shows by actor or actress name and pausing live television. Yet, ReplayTV also has some rather innovative features that not all other DVRs can offer. For example, some DVRs place a thirty minute time limit on pausing live TV, but ReplayTV allows their customers to pause three hours if they so desire.

Their consumers can also start viewing a program in one room of their home, pause and then finish watching in another room, picking up the program exactly where they paused in the other room! While other DVRs have very limited space for storage, ReplayTV boasts up to 320 hours of TV storage.

Keeping up with some of the newer TiVo developments, ReplayTV has added an internet based service. Adding to the extremely convenient service they already provide, customers can now go online from work or wherever in the world they may find themselves, and set their TV system to add new recordings.

ReplayTV may not have made it to household name status, but it is keeping up with the competition. They have recently joined DirecTV, just as TiVo has done in the past.
