It was not long ago that people were using old floppy disks to move information from one computer to another. These things were practical and they were very easy to use. Just about everyone knew how to stick a floppy disk in and get information from one place to another. Even programs and video games were put on floppy disks to be taken all over the place. The day of the floppy disk has long since passed, though. These days, people rely upon new technology to power their computer and move their data. Part of that new technology is the USB port, which is extremely important in the grand scheme of things.

If you have owned a computer for more than 30 seconds, you know all about the USB port. In most desktop computers, it is right in the front, sitting conveniently beside the power button so that you can’t miss it. In the past, the USB port would be in the back of the computer, so if you have a computer that is older than five years or so, then you can find it back there. Why is it so important that is takes a prominent place in just about every computer out there? This is because it can run just about anything.

Your USB is the port that is, these days, going to accept just about any peripheral device that you have. You can run a printer off of the USB, you can run a digital camera off of the USB, and you can even plug in a new mouse using the USB. This is important for computer users because, in the past, there was a different port for each of these things. It could get very confusing trying to figure out where everything went. Now, you just find the USB port and away you go. It is as easy as you could ever imagine to attach things to your computer.

Another primary thing that the USB port offers to computer owners is the ability to move data. You can purchase small drives that plug into the USB and they can literally carry tons of information. You can save written things, songs, video files, or whatever you want on this finger sized drive. Then, you can take it from one computer to another so that your files are more mobile. By sticking it right into the USB drive, you have everything that you could ever need on any computer that you ever use. It doesn’t take a lot of money to have a fully mobile computer library of all of your files.

The USB port also makes it very easy to back up all of your work onto one of these drives. You no longer have to put all of your computer’s essentials on 100 different floppy disks. Now, everything can fit right into the USB disk drive and you have it in case your computer crashes. This can be very valuable for folks who rely upon their data.
