Holiday season is upon us soon. Is there a movie buff on your holiday shopping list? If so, what better gift to give a movie buff than movies? Although the recent advent of high definition DVDs in both the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats is driving the home theater news cycles, Ordinary DVDs are still an outstanding value for the money. DVD performance, while noticeably lower resolution than high definition formats, is still pretty awesome, and a lot better than the image quality of broadcast TV.
Thus, DVDs are still a good value. While they are in the process of being replaced by high definition video, that will be a relatively slow process. When DVDs were first released they took the consumer electronics world by storm, replacing VHS video very rapidly part o the reason for this, though, was the poor image quality of VHS. VHS images were lousy even when there was nothing better to compare it to! The price of DVDs though will keep them competitive with their higher resolution cousins.
Also, there are still many more titles available on DVD than on HD DVD or Blu-ray. Blu-ray—literally thousands, compared to less than a thousand for either high definition format.
Still, even if cost is an issue, it may be worth giving high definition a chance for that home theater buff on your list. Although HD DVD lost the format war to Sony’s Blu-Ray, but the current economic downturn infused new life into Toshiba’s HD DVD format. The cost of the HD DVD disks has fallen from $40 in some cases to as little as $10.Payers can be bought for less than $60, compared with about $250 for a Blu-Ray player. Thousands of HD DVD titles are still available, including some recent hits like American Gangster.
This plummeting pricing makes HD DVD an excellent holiday option for your movie buff friends and family. For example, a recent sale at Amazon offered many HD DVD titles at rock bottom prices, sometimes even lower than the prices of regular DVD movies.
Titles available at rock bottom prices include, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Alexander Revisited, Final Cut, Batman Begins, Battle of the Bulge, Blazing Saddles, Blood Diamond, Blue Planet IMAX, Bullitt, Caddyshack, Casablanca, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, A Christmas Story, A Clockwork Orange, Constantine, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, The Cowboys, The Dirty Dozen, Dog Day Afternoon, The Dukes of Hazzard, Enter the Dragon, Excalibur, The Fugitive, Full Metal Jacket, The Getaway, Gods and Generals, Goodfellas, Gothika, Grand Prix, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Other titles available include House of Wax, Jailhouse Rock, Justice League – The New Frontier, The Last Samurai, Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2, March of the Penguins, Million Dollar Baby, Mutiny on the Bounty, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Out for Justice, The Perfect Storm, Phantom of the Opera, The Polar Express, Poseidon, Purple Rain, Rio Bravo, Road Warrior, Room With a View, Scooby Doo – The Movie, The Searchers, The Shining, Space Cowboys, Superman – The Movie, Superman II, Swordfish, Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines, Training Day, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Under Siege, Unforgiven, V for Vendetta, The Wild Bunch, Viva Las Vegas, The Wicker Man, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Wyatt Earp
