The DTV Alliance may be something you’ve never heard of before but rest assured that it does exist. What is the DTV Alliance? The DTV Alliance is a powerhouse group that features Intel, Modeo, Motorola, Nokia USA and Texas Instruments as members. So much for the members, but what is the DTV Alliance exactly?
The DTV Alliance represents a group of handheld devices that are designed to promote DVB-H, which is Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld). DVB-H is preparing to be the international pioneer in creating handheld devices that allow live television to stream directly into them wirelessly. What, you might ask, would be the advantage of having television on your handheld device? There are some advantages along with some disadvantages to watching television on your handheld. One of the advantages having access to live television on your handheld could be to keep you up to date with news, sports, or other broadcasts such as the political debates that have been taking place recently. Those with jobs that rely on time-sensitive information that is broadcast on television would greatly benefit from having life television in the palm of their hand to keep them abreast of need to know information.
One of the disadvantages to having DVB-H is the increased risk that using such devices poses while driving. Although it is a given that driving requires the attention that watching live television on a handheld cannot afford, it is still a possibility that it will happen and cause an accident. Another disadvantage of DVB-H is that there can be eye strain from extended viewing on the screens. This could be of even greater concern for younger viewers.
It should be understood that DVB-H is not the final word on digital video broadcasting for handhelds but rather is a set of standards and procedures governing the broadcasting of digital television to mobile devices, beginning with handhelds, which is globally recognized. The Digital Alliance is thus, like the father of DVB-H, expecting many children to come in the future for generations.
The DTV Alliance plans to see the handheld technology expand to include cell phones, smartphones, and as yet undersigned portable wireless devices that have an LCD screen. The DTV Alliance hopes to create an international platform by which DVB-H is the industry standard for live television to handheld, wireless, portable, and other such devices. The hope is that they, the DTV Alliance, can create global change in the way that live television is delivered.
Some of the obstacles the DTV Alliance has faced stem from how competitive the markets have been in the sales and implementation new technology for many devices. However, this has not been a major deterrent and the DTV Alliance believes that in the future, there will not only be a great deal more people who will embrace the technology but that there will be an even great deal more who will demand it for their devices and who are willing to purchase new devices that are already DVB-H enabled.
