There is a brand new display interface out there and it is called DisplayPort. For those people who were patiently awaiting a new solution in digital display, it is here. This product passed an inspection conducted by VESA and now it’s hot on the markets. A lot of computer users might be familiar with something called the VGA port, which has long been the most reliable standard in digital display. DisplayPort, however, looks like it is going to be a huge upgrade over the old standard, though. It is, for all intent and purposes, on the same level as HDMI, which many have become familiar with over the last few months.
What is the primary reason for its manufacture? The biggest computer companies out there are making it in order to process video and audio signals and send them to either a monitor or to a more functional home theater. This is really just something that has been developed because there was no nice alternative for consumers. Now, consumers have a really easy way to get things from their computer to their home entertainment station.
If you are thinking about something big and bulky, then think again. This is actually a very practical piece. It is somewhere around the bulk of a standard USB connection, which makes it quite small. It has the capability to support up to four data pairs, including your video and audio signals. Its transfer rate is a rather fast 1.62 – 2.7 gigabytes each second. On the video, you will be pleased to know that it can support up to 16 bits on each color channel. It has very good resolution, which has been a concern for a long time with some of the old digital display standards. The only thing that is not so bright about this device is that it is not compatible with HDMI and DVI.
One thing that consumers will be pleased to learn is that the new DisplayPort includes a content protection package. This was added onto the new device by AMD and it has very high-bit encryption. What does this mean in practical terms for consumers who might be worried about their security when using this device? You won’t have to worry about your all-important data being transmitted around the world to all sorts of unauthorized people.
You might like to know that there is already a new version of DisplayPort out, which includes quite a few very nice upgrades. One of the most important of these updates is an addition of fiber optic capability. With the original DisplayPort, only copper cables were permitted. Now, these more economical and more efficient fiber optice cables will work with this display standard. They also help with the transmission of information over long distances without having to worry about data deterioration.
All in all, the new DisplayPort is a really good upgrade for people who seek the increased capability with their audio and digital products. It has some excellent features and should be a really good update in technology over the old systems.
