Motorola, the mobile phone maker for fashionistas, have a new Bluetooth headset on the market. It’s the H5 MiniBlue. It’s the smallest Bluetooth headset ever. It is 33 mm by 41 mm; a teensy ear bud with a flanged ear tip to ensure that it fits your ear snugly and comfortably. Motorola cell phones are known for being stylish, and H5 MiniBlue complements them nicely.
The strangest thing about the H5, besides its tiny size, is that the H5 doesn’t have a boom microphone. The built in microphone picks up your voice through your ear canal. This may sound strange to you at first, but if you think about it, it makes sense. Have you ever heard a recording of your voice? Did it sound funny to you? Did you wonder why your voice sounds different than it does inside your head? That’s because the sound most microphones pick up is transmitted through the air. Solid materials also transmit sound—your bone mass is solid enough to transmit sound quite well. The H5 MiniBlue comes complete with a stylish, silver portable charging base.
If you have a Motorola H5 MiniBlue headset, you’ll want a ringtone that sounds great. These days most cell phone network providers permit you do download ringtones directly onto your phone from their network. You can also download ringtones from the Internet and use your computer to put them on your mobile phone. You can even convert your own music collection to ringtones—often, you don’t have to do anything more than load an MP3 onto your phone. Be careful, though, and choose something you won’t get sick of hearing over and over and over.
If you can’t hear what the other person is saying through your Motorola H5 MiniBlue, it’s probably not your headset. Or even your handset. You’re probably experiencing poor reception. Today over 200 million Americans subscribe to mobile phone services. According to a 2005 survey published in Consumer Reports, about a third of them are so dissatisfied with their mobile phone service they are considering switching to another mobile network provider. Calls are dropped for no apparent reason, and spotty network coverage means that even in a major city, where you stand may make a striking difference in how good your coverage is—or whether it exists at all. You might have a strong signal in your living room and no signal in your bedroom. You’d think that the industry, as riddled with problems as it is, would be unable to survive—yet cell phones remain wildly popular.
