Obama’s Xbox 360 Campaign?

By Sean Percival on October 11th, 2008

Imagine playing “Burnout Paradise” on your Xbox 360 and running across a billboard advertising the Vote For Change Obama website, like the picture on the right? Could it be possible that the Democratic presidential candidate has taken to advertising in a virtual environment such as this? Well that’s what Xbox 360 gamer Dragunov765 would like us to believe. However, before you start counting your cash to see if you can promote your latest wares on a virtual-reality billboard somewhere, let’s think about this move a bit more. Why would a presidential candidate advertise on an in-game billboard vs. a real billboard on an interstate highway near you? Sure, there are plenty of eyeballs glued to video games all over the country, but not all of them can vote.

However, if I was going to consider some sort of virtual-reality advertising methods, I think I would stick with something that has already been established by other real brick-and-mortar establishments to generate an impact or at least create branding for them. What am I talking about? Second Life, of course! You cannot tell me that a virtual world such as Second Life, with its millions of participants, would not be an ideal place to market and work on your brand. In fact, more and more major players are entering the virtual arena, from retail stores to news outlets. So why not a presidential candidate? I think before I would believe that all of the timing and logistics of putting an advertisement into an Xbox 360 game was considered, I would look for politics to enter the virtual-world of Second Life.
