Did you know that you could send faxes over the Internet? There are many software packages and services that allow you to use the Internet to send and receive faxes. Some are free, while some require you to pay. Most services require that you are able to send and receive email. Some also require you to have access to the World Wide Web.

There are also services available that convert incoming faxes to emails. Which is to say, when you receive a fax at a special fax number, the fax is scanned and sent to your email address as a bitmapped graphic attachment. Other commercial services include bulk faxing and the ability to put web page form information in a fax.

Fax software allows you to easily send and receive faxes without having to hassle with a fax machine, or tie up a phone line. Computer fax software has reinvigorated the tired old communication medium of the fax. It doesn’t require a fax machine, but you may need a fax modem or at least a scanner. Documents for faxing can be printed directly into the fax software and sent without ever needing to print even a single copy. Other benefits include the ability to attach multiple files together as one fax and the ability to change a fax into editable text using optical character recognition software.

Faxes can also be sent over the web or through email by using Internet fax software or by having a subscription to an Internet faxing service. The service works basically like a fax server. Server subscriptions are particularly convenient for small groups and small businesses where multiple people will need to use the service. In fact, small business owners or professionals who work while on the road or at home may need somewhat more sophisticated communication software. Many corporations find instant messaging software very useful and economical, but standard IM programs don’t allow for corporate needs, including the need for encryption.

Sending a fax using fax software is pretty simple. You attach the file or fax to a message addressed to the desired fax number, it is then converted to a fax and sent. In today’s global community, information is a commodity, and a valuable one. In fact, communication is probably the most valuable commodity. Thus communication is vital to a successful business. And as social animals, our leisure activities tend to be all about communication as well. Communication software gives us more ways to keep in touch with greater ease and economy, allowing us to reap the benefits of the Information Age.
There is free fax software available on the Internet but typically it includes only the most rudimentary features. For the full faxing package, you might need to spend a fair amount of money. Given that fax software not only saves money in paper, ink and toner, but it also saves time and the environment, it is probably worth the cost for you.
