Design software spans a great many applications, ranging from fashion design software, to interior design software, to graphic design software and Web page design software, and beyond. In a general sense, design software is any software used to plan the creation of an object, whether it’s a Web page, a poster, a wedding gown or a house.
Fashion design software is used for designing clothing and accessories. With fashion design software you can create lifelike fashion sketches right on your computer. Graphic design software and desktop publishing software are essentially the same thing. This is one of the more popular categories of design software. The difference between graphic design and desktop publishing software is that the desktop publishing category includes some consumer level programs not typically considered professional graphic design software. In a sense, desktop publishing software encompasses graphic design software, in that graphic design software is a subset of desktop publishing software—a subset for graphic design professionals, although it can be used by just about anyone.
The term desktop publishing originated among professional designers to describe a program called Aldus PageMaker. The program—and the company—were later bought by Adobe. The origins of the name are murky, but it is thought that the program’s interface has something to do with it. The interface is modeled after the workspace—or desktop—where graphic designers and publishers pasted up their pages to work out the layout and eventually to publish.
These days, desktop publishing includes software designed to be used by consumers, while graphic design software refers primarily to high-end page layout software applications like Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress. Also, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator are graphics software programs used for professional graphic design work, and are thus often considered graphic design software. There is no single best graphic design program. There are, however, programs that are particularly good at one task or another, better than the others. Before you ask which is the best graphic design program you have to consider what you want to do with it. Remember, graphic design is a very broad field.
Technically, web design is a subset of graphic design. The Internet has exploded to such a degree that there are more web designers than any other kind of designer these days. Thus it is de facto a separate category. When you build a web page, you might think that it really isn’t important what editor software you use. You can write HTML in MS Word or any other text editor, or you can use the tools your hosting provider offers. There are two kinds of web design software, text editors and “what you see is what you get” editors. Your choice of will certainly be influenced by what you want to do. Web design software ranges in price from free to several hundred dollars. There are good editors in every price range.
